FAQ

Q1 What is a first aid splint and when should one be used?

A first aid splint is a device used to immobilize a fractured, sprained, or injured limb to prevent further damage before or during transport to definitive care. In the field, splinting is recommended any time you suspect a fracture, or when movement of the injured body part would increase pain or risk of further injury. SAM Medical first aid splints work across various body parts including the wrist, ankle, and lower leg and can be applied quickly with minimal equipment.

Q2 What is the difference between a SAM splint and a traction splint?

A SAM splint is a mouldable splint used to immobilize fractures, sprains, and soft tissue injuries across various body parts. A traction splint is a specialized device used specifically for mid-shaft femur fractures. It applies inline traction to limit bone movement and reduce pain during transport. Each serves a distinct role, and both are standard in a fully equipped emergency kit or medical bag.

Q3 Are SAM Medical splints radiolucent?

Yes. SAM Medical splints are radiolucent and do not obscure x-ray imaging. Hospital staff can assess a broken bone or fracture through the splint without removing it first, reducing unnecessary movement of the injured body part before evaluation.

Q4 What is the difference between the EVAC-U-SPLINT and the FASPLINT?

Both use vacuum technology to mold to the shape of the injured body part without creating rigid pressure points. The EVAC-U-SPLINT line includes extremity splints plus adult and pediatric full-body mattress options for complete patient immobilization. The FASPLINT line covers standard extremity use, a compact half-back configuration for spinal and back injuries, and a full body option for full patient support. The right choice depends on your patient population and the scope of immobilization needed.

Q5 What does the SAM Pelvic Sling treat?

The SAM Pelvic Sling is designed to reduce and stabilize in the field. The patented AUTOSTOP buckle controls compressive force automatically, preventing over- or under-tightening. It is indicated when pelvic fracture is suspected following trauma and is built for rapid field application by EMS and first responders.

Q6 Do SAM Medical fracture management products include instructions?

Yes. SAM Medical includes instructions for use with every product in this collection. The SAM Splint User Guide covers more than 15 splint applications and the Quick Reference Guide is available for field reference. Training videos and support materials for the SAM Splint are also available on the SAM Medical training page.
